Unlike almost everyone here, I did not like or admire this movie. I thought it was pretentious, unreal, stiff and uncomfortable. Yes, Julie Christie was impossible with great self-conscious material, but that does not help much. The characters feel like cardboard creatures there to make a point. We do not even know what their marriage was like, with the sole exception of cases that had - that's all. As the daughter of a woman with Alzheimer hospitalized for ten years until his death, I can say from observation of my mother and everyone around them that there are too many false notes to fool even detail. Only one, the idea that women are now so advanced that it is putting pans in the freezer, but has the cognitive and linguistic skills of saying "All we can aspire to is the grace and dignity" is beyond the ridiculous. No Away from Her Drama film I've seen, it included, has the courage to show what actually happens - the loss of thought, language, personality, desire to shower and dress, the insistent repetition or cursing or anger, etc. is not ta beautiful, like the one here glamorized as if you need a warm fuzzy glow ( "Let's make love before you leave!") along fog. What really infuriates me is how everyone has praised exaggerated because it is so "beautiful." |
The fact that Fiona - the "it" in the title - is played by Julie Christie made the painful journey of crystal clear. Julie Christie is a marvel. She manages to us, without sentimentality, but with an intelligence that makes the point in history deeply human, closer to the disease, but sadly, without fear. Alzheimer's is like a dark tunnel that inadvertently enter the afflicted unable to avoid it. I asked what it was like to be aware of this, I mean, to know that sooner rather than later forgot about everything and everyone. Sarah Polley, the director, does a little miracle that gives us Julie Christie to answer that question. I felt very close to Fiona's husband - a magnificent performance by Gordon Pinsent - and came out of experience rather than high depressed. |
Sarah Polley is less than 30 years and "Far from it" is a genius to any old filmmaker. Wow. Just surprised by the sensitivity of the direction and dramatic performances. Julie Christie is so adept at convincing his audience, there was no dry eye in our selection. Olymia Dukakis and Gordon Pinsent were equally as gripping in this quiet, realistic story. Unless someone gets an Oscar - is really something wrong with the distribution and / or with AMPAS. come from all over the world! Sarah give their votes. |
