Holmes and Watson are recruited in a serpentine fashion to escort the heir to a European throne back to his native country following his father's assassination. Because the prince has been educated in Great Britain, Holmes persuades him to masquerade as Watson's nephew Nicolas on a ocean liner bound for Algiers. Unfortunately the ship is filled with red herrings as well as real assassins, and Holmes is challenged to outwit them all and deliver his charge to his destination. Among the suspects are a knife-throwing circus performer, two shadowy archaeologists, a hulking deaf mute, an enigmatic ship's steward, a chanteuse with a mysterious song case, and a gun-toting British dowager.

I've seen almost all of Universal's Sherlock Holmes series for now, and have found that the quality does not vary too much between each series. Each entry in the series is worth seeing, and I have not seen any I would describe as "bad." Pursuit to Algiers fits into this equation, but still, this is definitely one of the lesser mysteries Holmes. Feature that makes most of what makes the series beyond the large central plot line - a great performance from the leads, a steady stream of intrigue and great dialogue, but the mystery itself is rather vague. Just follow Holmes and Watson, care of a prince on a ship full of murderers. Adding to this is the fact that games are pretty samey, which does not help the film, with some changes of scene have not gone wrong. The DivX film Pursuit to Algiers seems to know that is not the greatest of mysteries and Holmes, and this translates to the screen. Holmes does not appear in the DivX film Pursuit to Algiers for a part of the runtime, which is never good when it is the main reason people are watching, and as good as Nigel Bruce, ie it is not enough to carry a DVD film Pursuit to Algiers on All the great literary detective on their own. I also prefer when Lestrade characteristics. However, despite the bad points, Exercise Algiers is a decent yarn and still worth seeing for fans of the films.
Please be sure to get the UCLA and the restored version of this classic on DVD. There are some terrible public domain versions of the Rathbone / Bruce series of floats, especially in the UK, which seems to have been ripped from poor quality of VHS tapes, and are worse than VCD quality. You will certainly enjoy this series even more if you see good quality. To search Algiers is not the best of the series - that honor goes to SH and the Spider Woman - but is certainly worth seeing, as it contains some delicious moments, but the story is a little thin. Poor Watson starts, as usual, while Holmes, at least, the sense of keeping his hair combed neatly back in this episode, unlike others in the series where his Barnet is all over the place. This is a return to again and again - a cozy night in front of the fire, and Holmes and Watson take on a chase. But remember! Do you and your family a favor and get the restored version. Avoid the cheapies!
Flicking through the channels I came across this old friend and made the weathercock down. Some of the other Rathbone Holmes are best friends, but this will do admirably. When they finally leave the convoluted and tortuous (as he himself admitted Holmes) behind the scenes to open and get to the fog of ships in which the action takes place we can relax - this is familiar territory! Holmes and Watson, the game, standing and surrounded by shady characters ever, a servant of the lady and run (for a change) to protect a king. Watson sings the lady, in a resonant baritone dangerously plays Holmes with a gram cracker a burden too, the giant rat of Sumatra is ... or is it? After seeing the final DVD, I learn that Martin and Leslie Vincent Kosleck were homosexuals living together. Nothing terribly unusual, of course, but when I watch these films generally Holmes intrusive world of sex never enters my head, so to admit I was surprised. Rathbone was apparently disappointed that his close friend Martin is associated with someone as "talentless" - in the acting department but Basilio! How did the climax in ill know Watson had forgotten to take his pipe with him? This huge stab in the dark (!) Allowed Holmes rough up your hair while Musso. Still great things.
Pursuit to Algiers is unfortunately devoid of any mystery. The villains and their intentions are made clear to the characters and the audience very early so there's no tracks or puzzles to work with Holmes. The opening was very well done, however, Holmes was in a secret meeting with foreign officials. Its mission is to be an escort for the King back to his native Romanovajebrovia or whatever. But there is a group of murderers after him that the task somewhat difficult. Why Sherlock Holmes, a detective, is hired to do the job of a secret agent is a bit strange, but creating a potentially interesting story as Holmes and Watson on board a cruise with a bunch of shady characters looking at each their movements. There is not much that had atmosphere, but some of the subjects covered in the fog scenes are effective. The only thing this post is happening because it seems a surprising twist ending credits with the following non abruptly. Still worth investing their time well.
