Times are tough, and Gertrude's financial needs cause her to make this arrangement before realizing how the burden will push her unstable nature to a breaking point. An American Crime is based on the true story of the murder of Sylvia Likens. The acting was superb in the film, including Ellen Page and Catherine Keener. Have been a fiction story, plot and characterization would be nothing short of fantastic. However, this is not a fiction story and it is clear that this movie: American Crime, An is about how the writers have taken away the evil and how dementia Gertrude Baniszweski truly was. The story does not cover most of the Sylvia endured brutal torture at random (before she was trapped in the basement). For example, actually had a passion for Gertrude Sylvia kicked in the crotch to the point that Sylvia autopsy showed a broken pubic bone. This film, however, attempts to portray a turbulent, sometimes sympathetic, Gertrude. I disagree with the way the viewer is made to sympathize with Gertrude and not see her not as a monster, but as a semi-normal person who, for reasons of poverty, frustration and fear of society the decision of their children, driven to commit this heinous crime. I know the director is trying to avoid sensationalism on the top of this story, but if you read accounts of what actually happened in this case, you will find this DivX film American Crime, An to be a muted version. Still, worth seeing.
