| See British acting royalty act circles around Anne Hathaway, which only seems able to blink and the expansion of its big cow eyes and see an icon of Jane Austen, portrayed without an ounce of incandescent wit, sharp vision, or of all mankind that the novels he wrote and whose adaptations have graced the screen. I can understand why the writer and director Austen embellished real life romance with Lefroy, and other biographical data, but why create such an ungracious, self-importance, pride and prejudice heroin? The way that is frankly Wissley seeks to vulgar and mean, and there was an opportunity to create more of a character that might (might have a question) have inspired the characterization of Mr. D'Arcy. Some effects of the camera are simply irritating, the score is boring, and all production is a muddy, quality. Clunky period piece, not in the same league as the latest Pride and Prejudice, or any of the movie: Becoming Jane adaptations of Austen's work. It really sucked. |
| I knew very little about this Becoming Jane Drama before I went to see him - I think the trailer was the sum total of what I had heard. Now, I know very little about Jane Austen or Jane to be his life just as I am considering a Becoming Jane film loosely based on / inspired by his life. The film: Becoming Jane tells the story of a young woman, Jane, who refuses to marry only for money and embarks on writing to support itself instead of relying on a husband. The story is well told, with excellent performances by all (especially Anne Hathaway and the always brilliant James Cromwell). The pace was perhaps a little slow at times and Jane it can be quite annoying and contradictory, but simply shows the flaws of human nature rather than a criticism of the DivX film Becoming Jane itself. Visually the DVD film Becoming Jane was impressive. Brilliant scenery, excellent costumes. All used to great effect to enhance the film: Becoming Jane without being too loud or distracting from the story. In general, this is a nice film, but there with Pride and Prejudice or Sense and sensibility, in my opinion. Well worth seeing (unless you are going to be upset about every little error), but probably not worth adding to the collection of DVDs. |
