At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon's forces controlled much of Europe. In Russia, one of the few countries still unconquered, the army prepares to face Napoleon's troops in Austria. Among the soldiers are Nicholas Rostov (Jeremy Brett) and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Mel Ferrer). Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda), a friend of Andrei's and self-styled intellectual who 'knows what's right but still does wrong,' is not interested in fighting. Pierre's life changes when his father dies, leaving him a vast inheritance. He is attracted to Natasha Rostov (Audrey Hepburn), Nicholas's sister, but gives in to baser desires and marries the shallow, materialistic Princess Helene (Anita Ekberg). The marriage quickly ends when Pierre discovers his wife's true nature. Andrei is captured and later released by the French, and returns home only to watch his wife die in childbirth. During a visit to the country months later, Pierre and Andrei meet again. Andrei sees Natasha and falls in love, but his father will only permit the marriage if they postpone it for one year. While Andrei is away in Poland on a military mission, Natasha is drawn to Anatole Kuragin (Vittorio Gassmann), a scoundrel and libertine. Pierre tells Natasha of Anatole's past before she can elope with him. Napoleon (Herbert Lom) invades Russia. Pierre visits Andrei on the eve of the battle, and observes the battle that follows. Traumatized by the carnage, he vows to kill Napoleon himself.

The best thing for me about this version of War and Peace is the beautiful score by Nino Rota. I had the vinyl recording of music in the'50s when he left and practically memorized at the time. Later, as my advanced study of music, I realized how Rota had captured the essence of Russian music. Their model is larger than Tchaikovsky, and much of Rota's music is a great tribute to the Russian master. My greatest regret is not stereo recording of this wonderful score has been tried. If you want to hear the biggest change, to hear the Tchaikovsky "Serenade for Strings" and then listen to Nino Rota of "War and Peace."
This War and Peace History movie version of Tolstoy's novel captures well the essence of their story. The VistaVision, Technicolor photography of Jack Cardiff, the whole piece looks like a classic painting. Nino Rota score perfectly compliments the beautiful images. The cast is excellent, and even physically ill Fonda is on the critical role of Pierre, his dignified person he represents. Hepburn, as always, is radiant as Natasha, and hits its mark perfect. Anita Ekberg Helene superstructure only brings to life; Ferrer, Homolka and Mills are all in the same way, this wonderful. Underappreciated great Herbert Lom as Napoleon was absolutely brilliant. Practically speaking, this is a remarkable War and Peace History movie adaptation of a great literary work, despite the care that comparisons made between the book and the movie.
As another IMDb'er mentioned, this War and Peace History movie is a visual moment after another, but unfortunately with terrible sound. The reason for the bad news is that the sound of the War and Peace movie was produced in the Cinecitta studios in Rome and at that time, all movies are shot with live sound. All that was later called the dialogue, music and ambient sounds all. In addition, the facilities in Italy primitive recording (this was only 11 years after the catastrophe of World War II), which maintains the quality of most of the dialogue. (One reason for Antonioni's films are a step forward in the next decade was his use of sound recording and location shooting). In any case, War and Peace is a worthwhile experience for the movie: War and Peace and Cardiff Vidor's Technicolor visuals Vistavision by the script that is often very beautiful letter, and many performances of some very charismatic actor, especially Audrey Hepburn's impressive. There are nearly certain that it will make your heart stop.
Beautiful War and Peace History to watch (Picture Oscar nom was earned). Beautiful epic DVD movie War and Peace score. Right direction and editing. Some of the best costumes ever working in the film. Even today no one can do a fine job of costuming. Mel Ferrer is nowhere near the same league as Omar Sharif in "Zhivago." Sharif was great, only half Ferrer. Ferrer is a big drawback. By contrast, Fonda shows great ability to act (not having read the book you can concentrate on performance rather than if it is part). Hepburn is perfect and offers a great acting performance. Yes, it is a style of DVD film War and Peace of 1950, which of course has some date. However, in the case of clothing, photographs and some of those who could not see better acting in a film: War and Peace of any era. This is an impressive effort all around.
